Home - about Phoenix Barn (arrival, house details and Guest Book)

1· Location

Phoenix Barn is in a lovely position, just back from the cliffs of West Penwith, at the end of a quiet tarmac no-through road/lane. It is in a beautiful rural situation, about 1/2 mile outside St Just on the south-facing side of the Cot Valley, with direct access to the coastal path (only 50 metres away) and just above a quiet cove and small beach. Cape Cornwall is 15 minutes walk, along the coastal path, and there are lots of places to walk direct from the house without having to get into the car.

2· The house

I characterise Phoenix Barn as an ordinary family home in an extraordinary location. Downstairs there is a large living room with an oil-fied Aga, a conservatory and porch; there is a door through to a small hall, with a shower and toilet room off, and the stairs. Upstairs there are two small bedrooms (one with a double bed, one with twin beds) and a small lounge with a double sofa bed. There is also the bathroom and an airing cupboard. There are radiators and wardrobes in each room, and water is heated by a solar panel, topped up by the Aga and an immersion heater.

3· Outside

Outside the house there is a small fenced terrace/garden with table and chairs, with parking next to the house. Alongside there is also a large, shared (and rather wild) garden. The lane continues for about 50 m to three further houses before the coastal heathland starts.

4· Children and Pets

Children and Pets are welcome - I live nearby with my Border Terrier! This is a very safe spot, where pedestrians and animals have priority on the lane, which is a no-through road, leading directly to the coastal path.

5· What (not) to bring with you

Rental is generally from 4 pm on the day of arrival to 11 am on the day of departure (this is the tightest I can do the changeover in!). Although I do not provide meals, you will be welcome to share my vegetables (basics like potatoes, onions and seasonal veg), eggs, butter, bread and milk (all locally produced) when you arrive. There is also orange juice, fruit and muesli, along with multiple teas and coffee, herbs and spices, salt and pepper and dry goods like pasta and rice. I also provide beds made-up with freshly laundered white linen, and plenty of clean white towels.

In St Just, there is a small Co-op supermarket (open 7 days a week, 8 am - 10 pm), along with a green-grocer, baker, butcher, Fish & Chip shop, 5 pubs, newsagent, chemist and post office - all open on Saturdays, many through to 5 pm. There are also farm veg stalls within easy reach of the house, which are generally open all hours!

Also available are bodyboards and a windbreak, along with some other outdoor equipment; there are lots of books in the house, and also a number of family board games. There is a TV with FreeSat, a DVD player, and a (free!) WiFi connection.
